Faculty
As one of 20 faculties and centres within the organisational structure of the University of Vienna, our Faculty’s mission is to ensure high-quality research and teaching in the field of computer science. This is carried out in accordance with current objectives, as well as guided and evaluated through the advisory bodies specified in the university’s bylaws.
Working together closely, the units within our team ensure the proper implementation of teaching processes and provide support for students. Our academic staff conduct research at international standards and share their expertise through a diverse range of courses.
Across three locations, our Faculty offers modern facilities for all members of the university. Since 2012, our Faculty is located at Währinger Straße 29, 1090 Vienna.
History & guiding principles
Although the roots of research and teaching in the fields of Computer Science and Business Informatics at the University of Vienna date back to the 1970s, the Faculty of Computer Science itself – established in 2004 as part of the implementation of the Universities Act 2002– is a relatively young faculty.
Not least for this reason, the Faculty of Computer Science sees itself as an innovative and forward-looking faculty within the teaching and research network of the University of Vienna, a university rich in tradition. The academic diversity and the broad range of subjects on offer are well suited to modern computer science, which is finding increased areas of application at intersections to natural sciences, economics, medicine, as well as social sciences and humanities.
Research & teaching
With over 300 academic and administrative staff, currently 13 sub-units, and the Datascience @ Uni Vienna research network, our Faculty is involved in numerous national and international collaborative projects alongside partners from industry and academia. In addition to addressing current research topics, these collaborations also enable research-oriented teaching and the integration of advanced students into an attractive, international research environment.
The approximately 2,100 students at the Faculty of Computer Science can choose from a wide range of degree programmes. All degree programmes are organised in accordance with the modern three-tiered European higher education system and deliver content using state-of-the-art information and communication technologies. The knowledge generated by high-quality research within the Faculty is imparted to eager students using the latest teaching methods and technologies, ensuring that our graduates enter a wide range of fields in business and science as competent and innovative professionals.
Doctoral School Computer Science
Supported by structured networking within the UniVie Doctoral School of Computer Science, our Faculty is training a new generation of computer science experts.

The studies conference serves to continuously monitor and optimise the organisation of studies in the areas overseen by the Directorate of Studies. It is an advisory body with equal representation, comprising of an equal number of students and teaching staff. The responsibilities of the study conference include making recommendations and statements on demand planning, quality assurance and the delivery of teaching, as well as on the design of the teaching programme. It also advises on matters relating to the organisation of studies and makes suggestions for improving studying conditions.
The representatives of the students are appointed by the Students' Representatives, while the teaching staff are appointed by the faculty conference. The term of office is two years. The Director of Studies and the Deputy Director of Studies participate as permanent, but non-voting, advisors and chair the meetings. A member of the dean’s team responsible for teaching may also attend without voting rights. If the Directorate of Studies deviates from the recommendations of the study conference, reasons must be given.
According to the organisation plan, scientific advisory boards may be established at the faculty and center levels as well as at the university-wide level. These advisory bodies, which are comprised of external academics, are intended to strengthen the international focus and orientation of research and teaching at the University of Vienna.
Proposals for the composition of the scientific advisory boards of the faculties and centres come from the respective faculties and centres themselves. The scientific advisory board has an advisory role and is intended to support the faculty or centre, especially regarding the development plan, the formulation of the target agreements and the implementations thereof.
