Mentoring
The mentoring programme is a free and voluntary initiative offered by the School of Computer Science for first-year students in bachelor’s programmes.
The mentoring programme is designed to specifically help new students ease into their computer science studies. During the first semester, students (mentors) who have already successfully completed the introductory phase of their studies accompany and support first-year students (mentees) in small groups and through regular meetings to get to know one another, network, and exchange experiences.
In doing so, the mentors provide their mentees with guidance regarding organizational hurdles and orientation challenges. The mentoring programme also takes gender and diversity into account.
How do I become a mentor?
The School of Computer Science offers its own mentor training programme. Completing the course ↗ developed by Renate Motschnig is designed to enable mentors to
- facilitate and reflect on constructive conversations,
- convey the key aspects of diversity,
- help mentees find their way without doing the work for them,
- promote community building among first-year students,
- and engage with first-year students in an active and self-directed manner.
The dates listed for this course are tentative. The times may be rescheduled or consolidated as needed.
Upon successful completion of the course, 3 ECTS credits can be applied toward the Bachelor’s degree programme in Computer Science (Module W2, WW, UF INF 13, or UF DGI 11). Additionally, upon successful completion at the end of the semester, a certificate of achievement in soft skills will be issued.
