New collaboration between Wiener Netze and the COSY subunit
A smart meter provided by Wiener Netze can now be used for research on processing energy consumption data.
As part of the EU research projects EDDIE and INSIEME, a new collaboration has been established between Wiener Netze and the subunit Cooperative Systems (COSY) at the Faculty of Computer Science. Wiener Netze is providing the COSY research group with a smart meter for research into the processing of energy consumption data. The new applications based on this will benefit both network operators and end users.
Collaboration within the EU projects EDDIE and INSIEME
The EU project INSIEME underpinning the collaboration has a total budget of € 16 million and brings together 57 partner institutions from 16 EU member states. Associate professor (Privatdozent) Oliver Hödl who teaches at the Faculty of Computer Science initiated the project – as he did the predecessor project EDDIE, with a budget of € 8 million – and serves as coordinator for both projects on behalf of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria.

New opportunities for research and teaching
The smart meter now available in the COSY:lab for research purposes is the same type as the one installed in Viennese households. The device allows research project studies to be conducted in a test environment. The smart meter can also be made available for practice‑oriented student theses.
Oliver Hödl’s teaching now incorporates energy‑data topics with a strong practical focus, which is proving very popular with computer science students. Over the past few years, more than 20 bachelor’s and master’s theses have been completed on research and innovation in European energy data exchange. Furthermore, a doctoral researcher in the COSY subunit, Nikolas Zechner, is now dedicating his work to the topic.
