The attention of mobile multimedia service consumers varies in respect to their current context. On the way, for example when crossing the street, the user is very likely to concentrate on the current traffic instead of watching Mobile TV in contrast to a static waiting time at a bus station where the user can more easily immerge in the world proposed by the selected service. But even at home, the user might be distracted or move from one room to the other putting the mobile device in the background of his current interest for a certain amount of time. The aim of the proposed specific Euro-NF project is to save bandwidth and energy consumption and to improve QoE by taking into account information on users’ context.
The aim of the proposed specific Euro-NF project is to save bandwidth and energy consumption and to improve QoE by taking into account information on users’ context. In more detail, our main objectives are:
- Defining passive and active consumption mode. How should the switch between active and passive mode be implemented?
- Which amount of bandwidth and energy consumption reduction can be obtained? Implementing the detection of network conditions. Measuring and modeling the bandwidth and energy consumption.
- How significant are the improvements in terms of Quality of Experience? Analysis of obtained data by computing average content loss decrease (e.g.in seconds or frames) and by performing user tests.
In this project we aim at studying how information on users’ context could be used to improve network conditions and the users’ QoE. To remain within the boundary of such a project, we considered only a very limited selection of context information. In future, it could be very interesting to enlarge the data collection by other parameters possibly leading to different or modified network usage strategies. In particular, it would be of great value to compare the proposed mode detection scheme to a motion based mechanism that is currently used. Similarly, the integration of a richer variety of haptic elements taken into consideration could be of high interest.
Until now, only multimedia on demand and Mobile TV services have been taken into account in this work but the same strategies maybe interesting for other services as well. It has been discussed that due to the pausing mechanism, energy and bandwidth savings are achieved.
