The research group Multimedia Information Systems is part of the Institute of Distributed and Multimedia Systems of the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Vienna, Austria.
The teaching activities of the research group mainly take place in the context of the studies in Computer Science (Informatik) and Business Informatics (Wirtschaftinformatik).
The research activities focus on multimedia information systems, in particular on techniques and methodologies for multimedia semantic data management, multimedia environments, and digital memory engineering. Further research topics addressed are in the area of IT-security. The group is involved in several national and international projects.
The group was established in 2000 when Prof. Wolfgang Klas was appointed Full Professor at the Institute of Computer Science and Business Informatics (Institut für Informatik und Wirtschaftsinformatik) of the School of Business, Economics, and Computer Science (Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften und Informatik) at the University of Vienna. The roots of the group actually go back to the multimedia group of Prof. Klas at the University of Ulm, Germany, founded in 1996. Since January 2005, in the context of the new university law (UG 2002), the research group is part of the newly founded Institute of Distributed and Multimedia Systems of the Faculty of Computer Science.
