Codis

Zusammenfassung

The IST trial project CODIS (Content Delivery Improvement by Satellite) wants to further emphasize the capacity of satellites to push content closer to network users, thus forming a content delivery network (CDN). CODIS will exploit the digital video broadcast (DVB) satellite STENTOR developed by Alcatel Space and to be launched end of March 2002 by the French space agency CNES.
The partners of CODIS are:

  • Alcatel Space (leader)
  • French Space Agency (CNES)
  • Activia Networks
  • Telediffusion de France (TDF)
  • IRT (German broadcasting research company)
  • Rohde & Schwarz
  • Nokia
  • University of Vienna

Evaluation of the CDN capabilities of STENTOR is done by setting up test scenarios and sending actual content over the satellite from one ground station to others located in France, Germany and Austria. The task of our Institute for Computer Science and Business Informatics of the University of Vienna is to measure the quality of service (QoS) of the CDN. We will do this by applying measurement techniques as found in available standards and scientific papers. Prototypical applications sending content over the CDN will include IP video streaming, MPEG-4/7 broadcast using the DVB standard and MHPs, Web access, electronic program guide, weather forecast, stock-market ticker, and a number of other applications.
